Hotel Salem

Salem, MA

It's not every day you get the opportunity to transform a department store building into a boutique hotel, but that's just what happened with The Hotel Salem. Located in the former home of Newmark's on Salem’s downtown pedestrian mall, Rachel Reider Interiors outfitted the 44 guest rooms and communal spaces with a combination of midcentury furnishings and period details from anchor stores of the ’50s and ’60s. Hints at the building’s retail history are seen in sculptural details like vintage cameras, abstracted photos of department store interiors lining hallway walls, and a hand-painted mural above a grand marble staircase. Taking advantage of the 16-foot ceilings and expansive original windows found in many rooms, bright white walls and warm wooden furnishings are complimented by muted jewel tones and rich brass accents. Two dining destinations, Counter and The Roof, complete this ode to mid-century modern styling.
