In recognition of International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8th, we're sharing some of our favorite women-owned businesses and female artisans that continuously enrich and inspire our work. Keep reading to find your own inspiration.
It's no secret that we love spotlighting, supporting, and collaborating with female artisans and designers. We ended 2022 with our holiday gift guide that puts a special focus on supporting female-owned and operated businesses across New England. Being female business owners ourselves we share a close connection with the unique journey of women in the larger industry of design. We're always looking for new ways to incorporate the art, design, insights, and inspired creativity of female artisans and women-owned businesses to heighten the level of sophistication and functionality in our design projects.
This month we are leaning in a bit more as we spotlight and recognize International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8th. First celebrated in 1911, and officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, IWD's mission is to celebrate women across the world, by recognizing their achievements and championing efforts to promote gender equality.
In honor of International Women's Day, we asked the team to share some of their favorite female leaders across the interior design industry. So here's our curated list incorporating all the different styles and perspectives represented by the women-owned businesses that we just can't get enough of.
Caroline Z Hurley - A painter and textile designer, Caroline uses colors and textures to bring beautiful, relaxed yet sophisticated artwork and textiles into homes.
Elisa Strozyk - “Elisa’s work has great depth and movement using wood veneer as a foundation. We just worked with her to commission a custom art piece for my dining room.” - Rachel
Emma Hayes - Emma designs beautiful wallcoverings. Her work is featured in 2 of our projects: Artfully Inspired (bedroom) and Luxe Loft Living (dining area).
Tyler Elise - An amazingly talented illustrator who recently broke into ceramics. Tyler’s work promotes positive messages with a sense of nostalgia.
Heide Martin- Based in Maine, Heide uses a very old technique to hand-craft furniture and housewares with wood, leather, fiber, and metals.
Kristin Conant - An oil painter and multi-media artist. Kristin’s beautiful work covers a wide range of subjects from nature to fantasy.
Salon Design - We’ve collaborated on several projects over the years with gallery founder Amanda Pratt. Amanda has an amazing eye and curated collection of unique artisans many of who are female.
Marieluise Hutchinson Fine Art - “A self-trained artist, her paintings remind me of home in New England.” - Erin
Elisa Adams - An award-winning Boston sculptor, Elisa’s unique work has been featured in over 90 exhibitions and numerous publications.
Thayer Design Studio - Founder, Meredith Thayer’s customizable, handmade rugs have really taken off in the industry! We’re huge fans.
De La Mer - “I met Vasi a few years ago while on the Cape. Her designs are beautiful! I am inspired by her creativity, hard work, and thoughtfulness.” - Carla
Liz Spencer aka The Dogwood Dyer - Liz uses natural dies to create beautiful pieces of (often wearable) art.
Debra Folz - Debra has an innovative design studio in Rhode Island. We love her use of interesting materials to create original objects for hotels and homes. (Fun fact: Debra and Rachel went to design school together and both won the 5 Under 40 award in 2011!)
We hope you'll explore these businesses and support them as often as possible.
Until next time!
